In my Learning Agility keynotes, I survey hundreds of people on their challenges in their learning process. People know that learning is important, useful and even acknowledge the joy of learning. But they struggle with the lack of time and motivation and do not take consistent actions to learn. Many also have a preference to be in their comfort zone and do not have specific learning strategies, beyond attending a course. Yet with rapid knowledge decay, the need for learning is more important than ever.

My research shows that individuals with positive learning and development outcomes are agile learners. They enjoy the fruits of learning agility - they have expanded skills and capabilities, they have a deeper and richer sense of identity that go beyond job titles. They are also happier with a greater sense of empowerment and self-esteem. Not surprisingly, they have more career options and are recognised and promoted more quickly at work.

What happens when learning agility is low?

On the other hand, people with low learning agility sometimes do not realise that. Instead, they tend to feel stressed by change and demands at work. They are also ignorant about their gaps and development needs. Less receptive to feedback, they respond defensively and remain fixed in their own thinking and behaviours. As a result, they are unproductive and take a significantly longer time and more effort to do something new.

This is why organizations such as World Economic Forum, SkillsFuture, McKinsey espouse learning agility as a key critical skill to thrive in today’s fast-changing pace of work.

So what actually is Learning Agility?

Learning Agility is to ability to learn different skills and capability quickly and easily. It’s an ability to accelerate our learning through our motivation, attitudes, learning process and environment. By learning anew and iteratively, we experiment and find answers in novel situations to be successful.
